چکیده

objective(s) comparison of prooxidant-antioxidant balance (pab) assay with crocin assay. materials and methods twenty eight serum samples were chosen, pab and the total antioxidant capacity were measured by pab assay and crocin, respectively, and the correlation of both assays, along with their correlation with other clinical and biochemical parameters, were determined. results a significant negative correlation was established between pab assay and crocin assay. also a significant negative correlation was established between pab and uric acid and creatinine. conclusion the results showed that by increasing the total antioxidant capacity, which is showed by crocin, the pab shifts in favor of antioxidants, which is showed by pab assay. now, it could be considered that the pab, along with other risk factors, might help in the prediction of the risk for cardiovascular events; and further research could clarify whether by application of pab assay and appropriate interventions for correcting oxidative stress, progression of the cardiovascular disease could be reduced.

Comparison of Prooxidant-antioxidant Balance between Patients with High Grade Gliomas (IV) and Control Group

Background & Aim: The most common primary brain tumors of the central nervous system are gliomas. Among a number of different biomolecular events, a strong relation between oxidative stress pathways and the development of this cancer has been proved. Oxidative stress (OS) is the consequence of an imbalance between pro-oxidants and antioxidants towards pro-oxidants. The pro-oxidants cause lipid ...

Evaluation of Advanced Oxidation Protein Products, Prooxidant-Antioxidant Balance, and Total Antioxidant Capacity in Untreated Vitiligo Patients

BACKGROUND Vitiligo is a chronic, common disease of unknown etiology, and oxidative stress is suggested to have a role in its etiopathogenesis. OBJECTIVE Advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs), prooxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB), and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) were evaluated regarding their role in the pathogenesis of vitiligo as well as their relationship with clinical p...

Simple and Sensitive Method of Fluorometry for Determination of Total Antioxidant Capacity

Background and Objective: Oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathogensis of various diseases, including lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and atherosclerosis. Total antioxidant capacity plays a significant role in the body’s antioxidant defense, so its assessment is a matter of the utmost importance. Currently, assessment of this capacity is performed in var...

Antimutagenic and antioxidant/prooxidant activity of quercetin.

The present study has been performed to evaluate the antimutagenic activity of quercetin, ascorbic acid and their combination against an oxidative mutagen. An effort was also made to correlate this activity to the in vitro antioxidant activity of these agents. Antimutagenicity testing was done in Ames Salmonella Assay system using Salmonella typhimurium TA102 against t-butylhydroperoxide as an ...

Antioxidant/prooxidant Effects of Bioactive Polyphenolics

Pine, grape and witch hazel byproducts are rich sources of polyphenols. From extracts (OW) soluble in both ethyl acetate and water we have generated a collection of fractions differing in percentage of pyrogallol groups. The mixtures were highly active as free radical scavengers against DPPH. The phenolics protected red blood cells from free radical induced hemolysis and were mildly cytotoxic t...
